On 16th December 2020, archaeologists found one of the long-lost Hunnestad picture stones near the city of Ystad, Sweden. The stone, with its image of a mythical beast, had been missing for more than 300 years. This presentation by Axel Krogh Hansen, who managed the excavation, introduces the story of this stunning rediscovery, along with some theories regarding the stone’s imagery and history. It is the first of two linked presentations at the JORVIK Viking Festival 2022 by experts on the Hunnestad Monument and its iconography.
